Tropical surf meets tradition & technique
Located in Kabalana beach along the surfing belt of Ahangama, this beach house offers the ultimate leisure experience on the west coast of tropical Sri Lanka.
The experience and atmosphere envisioned by the client was to be relaxed, informal and intimate. The brief mainly consisted of a spacious living-dining area, an outdoor gathering space, a swimming pool and comfortable guest rooms. The client’s choice of land, location and style fitted exactly to what he conceptualised.
Lush ocean beauty
Along the veranda, leading to the entrance, guests are met with an abstract depiction of the crashing of the waves in oxidised copper. This blend of tradition and technique is brought indoors with the eclectic mix of modern Sri Lankan custom designed furniture.
The building is inspired by the linear formation of the property and is designed to capture the best views of the tropics from all public spaces. The entrance is set amidst a small garden without a hint of the sea beyond.
Transitional, calming spaces
A palette of calming, tropical hues and locally sourced materials in combination with the building’s high gabled roof lend themselves to creating a light, tropical space to unwind. Each bedroom is a celebration of the traditional artisanship of Sri Lanka’s local craftspeople, characterised by the delicately hand carved timber panels that adorn each bed, to the soft handloom fabric that rests upon them.
All layers of the building are designed to run parallel to sea, offering unobstructed views of the warm, beautiful Indian Ocean, ultimate privacy and the open plan layout completely encompass the front yard. The swimming pool runs along the side of the property fringed by a timber deck. This transitional space is a flexible gathering platform under cooling shade.
