Vibrant medieval motifs, with an exotic tropical flavour
Built on 36 acres of gardens, located where the ‘Kalu Ganga’ river meets the ocean, Avani Kalutara is a contemporary resort with a distinct Sri Lankan flavour. The hotel celebrates the country’s elaborate traditions and the prevailing beauty of its location. The land is unique with the vast ever-changing Indian Ocean on one side and the stillness of the lagoon on the other.
The Inspiration and vision of the project was to embrace the contrasting beauty with the use of traditional elements in a contemporary style. The non-existence of boundaries between inside and outside was a design element throughout the original building and a feature that was incorporated into the renovation project.
A vibrant temple
The use of local materials and techniques such as cut and polished cement and hammered granite stone slabs juxtapose the traditional motifs with clean modern lines. Traditional furniture and art accent contemporary interiors and bright tropical soft furnishings add to the vibrancy of the space.
Guestrooms feature headboards that are adorned with laser cut timber panels influenced by traditional floral and geometric patterns. The exotic colour palette, ancient motifs and bespoke furniture are reminicent of traditional Sri Lankan Buddhist temples.
